When an iPhone suddenly stops charging, the instinct is almost always the same: "my charging port must be broken." Sometimes that's true — but more often than people expect, something else is actually behind it. Here's how to think through what might be going on before assuming you need a port replacement.
Signs it's genuinely the charging port
- The cable has to be held at a specific angle to get any charge at all
- The port looks physically damaged — bent pins inside, or a loose, wobbly feel when a cable is inserted
- It worked fine until the phone was dropped, got wet, or the cable was yanked out at an angle
Signs it's probably NOT the port
- Wireless charging also doesn't work — if your phone won't charge even on a MagSafe or Qi charger, the port isn't the issue
- A different cable and adapter charge your phone just fine — points to a cable or adapter problem, not your phone
- The phone shows "This accessory may not be supported" repeatedly, even with an Apple-certified cable — sometimes a software issue rather than hardware
- The phone is several years old — battery degradation can cause charging to behave erratically, completely separate from the port
Why guessing at home can make things worse
Charging ports are delicate, tightly packed components, and iPhones in particular pack a lot into a very small space right around that port. Poking at it with a pin, toothpick, or anything sharp to try to "clean it out" is one of the most common ways we see a simple issue turn into a real repair — bent pins, scratched contacts, or debris pushed further in rather than out.
What actually needs a real diagnosis
The honest answer is that several very different problems — a blocked port, a damaged cable, a failing battery, a software glitch, or a genuinely broken charging component — can all look identical from the outside. Without opening it up and testing properly, it's genuinely hard to know which one you're dealing with.
Why this matters before you decide what to do next
Paying for the wrong fix (or risking damage trying to DIY one) often ends up costing more than just getting an accurate diagnosis in the first place.
We find the real cause before recommending anything
At Mobile2Fix, we diagnose what's actually causing your charging issue — port, battery, cable, or something else — before recommending any repair, so you know exactly what's wrong and what it'll take to fix it properly.
Bottom line: a phone that won't charge has more possible causes than most people realize. Rather than guessing (or risking further damage trying to fix it yourself), a proper diagnosis is the fastest way to actually solve it.
