Back-to-School Device Checklist: Get Your Kid's Laptop and Phone Ready Before Classes Start

With the new school year right around the corner, now's the time to make sure your kid's laptop, tablet, or phone is actually ready for it — not the week homework starts piling up. Here's a simple checklist to run through, and what to do if something needs attention.

1. Battery health

A laptop that dies halfway through a school day is a real problem, especially if your child's school doesn't have outlets readily available in every classroom. If the battery drains fast or the laptop only works plugged in, that's usually a straightforward, affordable fix — not a reason to buy a new device.

2. Cracked screens and broken hinges

Screens that survived a school year of being tossed in a backpack often show it by the end. A cracked screen or a loose hinge won't necessarily stop the device from working, but it will get worse with daily use — better to fix it now than mid-semester when it's needed most.

3. Storage space

Slow-running laptops are often just full. Photos, downloaded files, and old apps pile up over a school year. A quick storage cleanup (or upgrade) can make an "old, slow" laptop feel new again, without replacing it.

4. Charging port and cable wear

If a charging cable has to be held at a weird angle to charge, or the port feels loose, that's worth fixing before it fully stops charging altogether — usually a quick, inexpensive port repair rather than a full device replacement.

5. Software updates and backups

Not a repair issue, but still worth doing before school starts: make sure the device is updated, and back up anything important in case something does need repair mid-year.

When repair makes more sense than replacing

For most of these issues — batteries, screens, ports, storage — repair costs a fraction of buying a new laptop or phone, and takes far less time than you'd expect. If a device is otherwise running fine, there's rarely a good reason to replace it over one fixable issue.

We can check it out before the first day of school

At Mobile2Fix, we handle laptop, tablet, and phone repairs for families across Deerfield Beach, Pompano Beach, Coral Springs, and the surrounding areas — including battery replacements, screen repairs, and charging port fixes, often same-day.

Bottom line: A quick device check-up now can save you from a mid-semester scramble later. Better to catch a fixable issue in August than during finals week.
